We all say we dont care what other people think about us, but in the age of social media, we know that is not true. This type of thinking can hold you back. In the final part of our series “Selfies” we look at not only why you shouldn’t let others opinions of you matter, but some steps to make that a reality.

Recently I was at church and the pastor was preaching on a sermon he called “Labels”. This was by far one of the best Sunday morning sermons I have heard in years. He spoke about how our society is in love with labels: on our clothes, in our house, the cars we drive, the foods we eat, but also labeling others. We become consumed by what other people think of us or how they label us. He said a label is a temporary title someone who did not take the time to get to know us, places on us. In doing research for this posts, I came across a blog that was very explicit but wanted people to know 10 reasons they don’t care about your opinion of them. A few I liked were:

  • I’m not on your payroll.

  • You didn’t give birth to me.

  • I didn’t ask for it.

  • You have no money.

There were a few others that were great that are not really appropriate for this post, but number 4 (above) really stood out to me. We tend to let people who are no better off than us, carry so much weight when it comes to living our own lives. I came across another public post where a leader of a camp was fielding questions from the audience. It basically was people in the crowd questioning him on tedious little things and why he chose not to do them. His response was brilliant: It just doesn’t matter! he went on in detail to say:

The best designers and the best programmers aren’t the ones with the best skills, or the nimblest fingers, or the ones who can rock and roll with photoshop or vim, they are the ones that can determine what just doesn’t matter. That’s where the real gains are made. Most of the time you spend is wasted time on things that just don’t matter. If you can cut out the work and thinking that just doesn’t matter you’ll achieve productivity you’ve never imagined. It’s there if you just don’t pay attention to the things that don’t matter.

Imagine what you could do with all the time you spend trying to live up to what others determine you are to be. Even better, imagine what you could do with all that time you spend on social media. As you know, I don’t believe in just telling people what I do to move to the next level, I like to help give the tips needed. You can find those tips here if you want to get started today (remember, procrastination is the first step to not doing something)
