“If you start a positive habit and see that it has a positive effect upon your business or health outcomes, your brain is more willing to utilize resources to continue that behavior and scan for new ones,” said Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage. “The resulting effect is a cascade of success as greater meaning and well-being fuel more successes than garnered by defensive pessimism or cynicism.” Part 3 of our series “Born To Win” talks about something we all have, but don’t always pay attention to, our attitude. Written by D’Angelo Smith.

In this series Born To Win, we would like to give you some reasons why your attitude matters and how to check your own. We must continually reflect as imperfect beings and evaluate ones’ self to always progress pass our current state of being. In the previous series, “Selfies”, we charged you all to practice self-love, self-care, and self-respect. Now, we want to address the conduit in which these practices fail or succeed. Attitude, according to Collins English Dictionary, is “the way a person views something or tends to behave towards it, often in an evaluative way”. Our attitude makes the condition of your life and not your circumstances, so let’s check our attitude to really embrace this moment to shine!

“If you think you are beaten, you are;

If you think you dare not, you don’t.

If you’d like to win, but think you can’t

It’s almost a cinch you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost,

For out in the world we find

Success being with a fellow’s will;

It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you’re outclassed, you are:

You’ve got to think high to rise.

You’ve got to be sure of yourself before

You can ever win a prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go

To the stronger or faster man,

But soon or late the man who wins

Is the one who thinks he can.”

Walter D. Wintle

The poem above is one that speaks directly to the topic at hand, ATTITUDE, because “it is all in the state of mind” that any success happens. We want everyone to succeed in the moment and looking at our present condition we must check our attitude to see if it is one that is positive or negative.

Negative attitudes bring about negative consequences that in the end dismantles the faith to succeed. Also, it will cause others to have a not so fond attitude toward you. Many times we let our circumstances determine our condition of life and not choose to determine it ourselves. Attitude can make your life a living “hell” or a “heaven” on earth, which one would you choose? Attitude affects and effects every area of your life, therefore we must be aware of it. Within self-care, we believe that it is important to constantly practice checking your attitude because the affect that it has on life can build.

Gandhi said, “Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because your words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive because your behavior becomes your habits. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny.”

One of the best books I have ever read was entitled How to “Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie, in which he states, “It isn’t what you have or who you are or where you are or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about it.”
